Population: 41617

Twenty kilometres of coastline, rocky coves and big extensions of sand, solitary beaches and beaches with both sports and playful activities. Dénia has a wonderful climate, whilst its landscape, is an added plus to its blue waters. The nature reserve of el Montgó, rising up, as Blasco Ibáñez said, like “a giant hand”, has served as a watchtower for a littoral which has been inhabited for over 4.000 years. Nevertheless, this out-standing enclave of the Costa Blanca has more: Its patrimony gives a good account of the historical brilliance of what it was once protagonist to, and its gradual conversion into a modern city, in which leisure occupies an out-standing position.

Santa Pola

Street Map

Population: 22253    Height: 6m

The first settlers inhabited the “Cueva de las Arañas” (the cave of spiders) in the third and fourth Millennium BC. In the first century AC., with the arrival of the Romans, the area became known as “Portus Illicitanus”, developing into one of the key ports for maritime commerce. From this period there are many archaeological remains. After the fall of the Roman Empire, and during the medieval era the area suffered a fall into general decline, largely due to the plundering of Pirates. This motivated the building, in the XVI century, of the Castle-Fortress and the “Torres Vigía” (vigilance towers). From the XVIII century onwards the town was concentrated around the Castle, the nucleus from which the development of the settlement evolved. Nowadays, Santa Pola is a tourist municipality with the most important fishing fleet in the Spanish Mediterranean.

Valencia

Population: 739014              Height: 15m

Valencia can be a city of clichés: the light, the moon, the gun-powder, the paella, the flowers, the fallas... they are keys which attempt to explain what words cannot tell. It is necessary to visit and get to know Valencia to verify that centenary traditions live together with modernity; that sea and city are compatible; that the green colour of farms can be kept together with a modern urban scheme; that Valencia is unique at night and during the day. But the capital of the river Turia is more than that. In addition to the innumerable attractions which the city has had for years, now there is a series of showy infrastructures such as the Ciudad de las Artes y las Ciencias (City of Arts and Sciences) and the Museo Príncipe Felipe (Prince Philip Museum) which, as they are located in this environment, are linked to culture. Valencia has put the icing on the cake, although it will not have a rest and will go on decorating its succulent presentation.

The Vía Augusta, once passed close to the municipality, and reveals the important position held by the municipality long ago in Roman times, preserved today on its own merits having been declared a historical - artistic site. Home to the painter José Ribera, The Españoleto and two Popes from the Borja dynasty, Xátiva’s importance has stood out over centuries. In the XI century Europe's first paper mill was installed in the city – paper made from straw and rice, today is still known as "Xativi" paper. From the middle of the XIII century to the beginning of the XVIII century it was the second city in terms of political importance and population in the kingdom of Valencia. As with all important and coveted cities, Xátiva also had a dark era with the arrival of the Borbone family with Philip V, after winning at the battle of Almansa, he ordered the expulsion of the "setabenses" and to burn the city. In recollection of this insult, the village preserves a portrait of the monarch hung upside down in the l'Almodí museum.
